Oh Vatavian

Words: Jóhann Steinarsson
Music: Piano Man by Billy Joel

It’s seven o’clock on a Wednesday night
As the populace slowly comes in,
And the Baron sits down with a sigh and a frown,
For attendance is running quite thin.

He says, ‘Bard, will you sing me a melody,
Oh a ballad or sonnet will do,
Just a tune that’s so sweet it brings us to our feet,
And relights our passion anew.’

Oh, la de da, de de da,
La la, de de da, da da…
Sing us a song, o Vatavian!
Sing us a song tonight,
For we’re all really proud of this Barony
That brings us together so right!

Now the fighters they stand in the corner now,
As they laugh over tales of the wars,
Of Estrella, and Lilies, and Pennsic as well,
And the honors that they’ve won before.

But they say that they ain't what they used to be,
And their armor is falling apart,
So we strike up a tune, just to banish that gloom,
And stoke the fire still in their hearts.

Oh, la de da, de de da,
La la, de de da, da da…
Sing us a song, o Vatavian!
Sing us a song tonight,
For we’re all really proud of this Barony
That brings us together so right!

I see one man who’s here almost every day,
Trading laughs with his children and wife.
They’ve been part of the Kingdom for many a year,
And probably will be for life.

I see weavers and dancers and carpenters,
And they smile as they’re plying their trade;
Though the Mundane world weighs on their shoulders each day,
In the Barony, they’ve got it made.

Oh, la de da, de de da,
La la, de de da, da da…
Sing us a song, o Vatavian!
Sing us a song tonight,
For we’re all really proud of this Barony
That brings us together so right!

Now the crowd starts to grow on this Wednesday night,
I see many good friends, old and new,
And the Baron is starting to smile once again,
So I sing with a passion renewed.

And the populace starts to join in with me,
And they smile as I'm singing my song,
And though some folk may jeer, I will shed me no tears,
For the Barony’s where I belong!

Oh, la de da, de de da,
La la, de de da, da da…
Sing us a song, o Vatavian!
Sing us a song tonight,
For we’re all really proud of this Barony
That brings us together so right!
