The Truth Of It All
(A Brigands Lament)

Words and Music: Vortemir Fire-tender and Dis Embaryuska
A.S. XXXI (June 28, 1996)

You've seen my countenance out on the roadway
Wanted for murder, a Highwayman, he
But I've come to town, and I've come for the Festival
I'll cause no trouble if left to go free

Now we could cross swords, or we could drink ale
We could lie bloody, or lay down our mail
We could do battle, or play games of chance
But I've just come to watch the girls dance

You follow your Captain and stand by him honestly
Defending his honor, for you think him true
If you knew the truth you'd be quick to abandon him
Sit with me lad, I've a tale to tell you

Now we could cross swords, or we could drink ale
We could lie bloody, or lay down our mail
We could do battle, or play games of chance
But I've just come to watch the girls dance

I once had a friend, and we served in the Military
Brothers in all but the blood, it was said
But he longed for power, so he did foul murder
To save his own skin, put the blame on my head

Now we could cross swords, or we could drink ale
We could lie bloody, or lay down our mail
We could do battle, or play games of chance
But I've just come to watch the girls dance

My friend and your Captain are one and the same
Cover your back, or he’ll do you like me
You'll cross him once, and he'll ruin your name
Then, 'twill be your face the travelers see

Now we could cross swords, or we could drink ale
We could lie bloody, or lay down our mail
We could do battle, or play games of chance
But why not just go watch the girls dance

You've seen my countenance out on the roadway
Wanted for murder, a Highwayman, he
But I've come to town, and I've come for the Festival
Mind to yourself, lest you end up like me
